The Ten Commandments

Read them.  Learn them.  LIVE them!

The dog culture creed:

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
  1. Thou shalt worship each and every Dog unconditionally.
  2. Thou exists to serve every Dog keeper, and must pay respects daily.
  3. Thou shalt realize that each and every dog and his keeper is the epitome of absolute perfection and wonderfulness.
  4. Thou shalt pay alms, and put the almighty Dog ahead of all else.
  5. Thou shalt offer no unkind words against Dog, nor shalt thou lift a finger against Dog or his Keeper for any reason.
  6. The Almighty Dog requires Blood Sacrifice, and that is yours to give.
  7. Grant that what is Dog's upon Dog, also grant everything that is NOT Dog's upon Dog.
  8. Thou shalt respect that the life of each individual Dog is of Infinite Value.
  9. Torment and death must come to thou that not serve the almighty Dog and His Keeper.
  10. Thou shalt go forth and wage war for the sake of Dog.

  9. So, there's this young girl on Facebook who's had a Pit bull "service dog" for a while. Now she's going to put him down because he's attacked her a few times. The nutters are foaming at the mouth over the whole mess. I question her, after all, you usually don't just get a few broken fingers from a pit attack. Rescue angels are whining and breeders are offering their support for her putting him down. If you're bored look for "Tater Tot" on Facebook. They're all nuts.

    4. Interesting... perhaps a personification of the almighty DOG.

Here is a thought - and I do not quite have my head around it yet:

These fools know at some level that they worship a false DOG. They know that what they say might get them into trouble. Therefore, they spew anthropomorphic "doggy talk" as that gives them a later "out" in the form of "I was just kidding". You know, its just a JOKE, I was pretending to be an animal. That absolves them of any responsibility or ownership of anything they say.

    9. First lets be clear, no real animal trainer would choose a pit bull to train as a SD. In fact picking even a suitable breed as a puppy and taking it to a trainer is no guarantee. Even among breeders who have hand picked dogs that have the temperament there is a high fail rate for a completed real SD.
A SD in the hand of a child is a recipe for a fail. Even the best dog needs to be trained so to speak daily. Children are simply not capable of that.
So at the end of the day a faux trainer who worships at the alter of the pit bull pimp handed a dog to a child and it went south. And they did what I've seen over and over. If the living breathing animal comes back and doesn't perform to what the owners want or there are issues blame the trainer because they must have beat or hurt the animal while in their care.
Trainers even excluding the issue of a pit bull as a SD can only work with what they are given.
No matter how much someone loves a dog, horse or whatever they are individual living breathing organisms that may or many not have the stress tolerance to handle the job.
I do know that in a legitimate SD training program a dog that cannot be taught to stop jumping or can't handle the stress of crowed environments full of strangers is removed from the program.
Now lets assume this dog trainer actually got rough with the dog. Unless he/she was using cattle prods and waterboarding the mutt an animal with the correct temperament wouldn't come out attacking it's owner.
For pit owners there always has to be a villain that caused their wiggle butt to go game. A bike. Someone sneezing, A child walking by. Falling down, Delivering the mail, Mowing the lawn. Walking another dog. Having a cat in your fenced yard. Being a baby in a bouncy swing. Being a baby and smelling like formula. Walking, breathing are all things that can make a pit bull especially fell like its life is in danger and defend itself.
More likely than not the trainer knew and might even had voiced concerns that would have been brushed aside by the wave of denial.

  10. I don't know any personally and I prefer to keep it that way. I guess the rescue she got him from is stepping in and evaluating him. Aren't real, honest to goodness service dogs well trained? I wonder if before the fake service pits any other rescues just adopted out dogs as service dogs? I knew someone who trained k-9s for police work, and they were very selective about the breeders and the dogs they used.

    2. I estimate that "Tater Tot" is a classic example of a faux service dog. Tater's "Person", who is a minor by the way, bought some fake credentials so she could easily override everyone else's association rights.

Like lipstick on a pig, slapping a vest on a dog does not change its behavior in any meaningful way. Tater proceeded to "pit-out". So, now its time for teenage fur mommy to lather, rinse and repeat with another phony service mauler.

      Delete
    3. One way to curb this problem would be to flat-out ban most breeds from personal service work. Most dogs lack the temperament or capability, and it's easy to falsify. I see fake service vests a lot, but it would be a waste to complain about it (thankfully, it's usually "comfort" dogs and not seeing-eye Rottweilers or whatever).

It would be much less of a hassle for everyone if we did away with the "all dogs can be service dogs" idea and sorted out what necessitates a service dog in the first place. Obviously, blind people could have them. In such a tough situation, many would prefer a well-trained service dog to a cane. Epileptics can learn to recognize oncoming attacks, and the paralyzed can get by with wheelchairs and nabber sticks. But I wouldn't close off dogs as an option to them, because people with legitimate service dogs usually take them seriously rather than as some special privilege.

I don't know when people started believing any dog could be a service dog. America has gotten by fine with Labs, golden retrievers, and the occasional poodle or German shepherd. I have mixed feelings about German shepherds as service dogs, though I've seen much more of the former two. And to nobody's surprise, it's two groups of breeds that get falsified over the rest. The first are the toy breeds claimed to be comfort dogs (15 years ago the ADA would have scoffed). The second, of course, are breeds prone to aggression, particularly pit bulls. I understand pretending they make good service animals is another way of convincing the public they're just like other dogs. It should go without saying that any dog bred for fighting or guarding isn't fit for this line of work.

      Delete
    4. It would appear that exhibiting even the simplest task of walking on a lead correctly is no longer a requirement for a SD.

      Delete
    5. Most of the GSD dogs I've seen in any line of work are police or guard dogs. They seem well suited for those jobs, so I can see letting them be true working dogs. Poodles are one of the more intelligent and trainable dogs, so I could see where they'd be good service dogs. I see more golden and yellow retrievers as service dogs. They usually have very steady temperaments and are very well suited to the jobs they are given. Those were always the ones I saw as legit and fit for their work. Toy breeds can be good pets, but I don't get the difference between "comfort", "emotional service" and other terms like that and pets. A seeing eye dog in a place of business won't be causing problems, an ESD pit bull, or toy breed could be the total opposite. The pit because it could hurt or kill if it chose to, the toy, because when they're not well trained, they're usually yappy. Nobody should mind a person with obvious disabilities having a service dog helping them while they're out and about. Nobody should be forced to accept the Esd/comfort dogs though.

      Delete
    6. Cardinal: We have medications for epilepsy, diabetes, anxiety and mental disorders as well as therapy so I think service dogs should only be used for PHYSICAL disabilities. Here is my concept of changes to the ADA. Penalties must necessarily be harsh to deter phonies:

      1) A dog which as an individual has a history of aggression, including but not limited to killing, mauling, biting, nipping, lunging, growling, food aggression, dog aggression or other animal aggression shall NOT be eligible for use as a service dog.
      2) A dog which according to its BREED STANDARD has been BRED for aggression, including but not limited to the American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, American bulldog, preso canario, Dogo Argentino, Cuban bloodhound, and any other pure bred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs; shall NOT be eligible for use as a service dog.
      3) A dog which according to its BREED STANDARD has been BRED to be disliking or distrustful of strangers, including but not limited to the Akita, Chow, Caucasian Mountain Dog, Cane Corso, and any other pure bred or mixed breed dog that is a combination of these dogs; shall NOT be eligible for use as a service dog.
      4) A dog which as an individual has a history of disliking, distrusting, or being aggressive towards strangers shall NOT be eligible for use as a service dog.
      5) Any dog which is in current use as a service dog which exhibits ANY of the above behaviors shall NOT be eligible to continue as a service dog.
      6) Any dog which is not spayed or neutered shall not be eligible for use as a service dog.
      7) The MINIMUM penalty for the death of a human by a service dog shall be not be LESS than half a million dollar fine and not LESS than five years in jail. The dog shall be euthanized.
      8) The MINIMUM penalty for the severe injury of a human by a service dog shall not be LESS than half a million dollar fine and three years in jail. The dog shall be euthanized.
      9) The MINIMUM penalty for the death of another animal by a service dog shall not be LESS than one hundred thousand dollar fine and a year in jail. The dog shall be euthanized.
      10) The MINIMUM penalty for the severe injury of another animal by a service dog shall not be LESS than a fine of one hundred thousand dollars. The dog shall be euthanized.

    7. Trisha - I find German shepherds uniquely fit for many kinds of work. I don't consider them service dogs if they're in police or guarding--service dogs are defined by their use in assisting one person's disability. Comfort dogs are glorified pets that get to be taken around everywhere, apparently. Today I saw my first ever therapy pit bull, too. What a time to be alive.

KaD - That's a thorough proposal. I don't have an issue with epilepsy service, though medication is much more convenient and I think most epileptics choose that. My line of thought is that the dog could detect an oncoming seizure and warn the person, and drag them to a safer spot if they suffer an attack. For all the other things you listed, I agree there's no need for dogs. To get one for a mental disorder is, in my opinion, a fancy way of saying "comfort dog" and very patronizing. You can't heal by clutching onto an animal, despite what the rescue industry might tell you.

      Delete
    8. Cardinal, GSD are also intelligent when well bred and I can see where they would make excellent service dogs as well. I'm just not familiar with them as a choice since the honest service dogs around here are mostly retriever types. As for the therapy pit, I've seen a few, nobody who really felt they needed a comfort dog would choose a bully breed. I still say, my pets provide some comfort and companionship, as well as helping teach my seven year old responsibility. However, they're PETS not therapy animals. I know the difference. To me a true therapy animal provides some comfort to those in nursing homes or sometimes hospitals, and isn't owned by any of the patients or residents. When my mom was in a nursing home, my dad got permission to bring their dogs to see her. That's using pets in a therapeutic way, but not making any false claims. It was only twice because my mom went back to ICU and passed away, but he was trying to help her any way he could. I can see doing that on occasion, but if you "need" a dog to go grocery shopping for any reason that isn't a physical disability, then maybe you should just pay someone to go shopping for you.

One of the biggest issues is the degeneration of once useful breeds. The majority of SD dogs for blind I seen years ago were GSD.

    10. Trisha - German shepherds are smart and perhaps the most versatile working dog of all. My reservation is the fact that they're more prone to aggression than many other breeds. The odd thing about them is that they seem to have a unique trainable nature that nullifies the aggression or channels it in an appropriate direction, i.e. police dogs. Maybe part of it is the versatility. I'm not opposed to dogs being brought into hospital rooms for patients to pet. In an official setting, the dogs are quiet, calm, and clean. It's when people cling to their own dogs for comfort that I draw the line. I'm sorry about your mother.

Eileen - Breed degeneration is a commentary on anthropomorphism. Many people choose any dog they want and think they can magically transform it to fit with their lifestyle. The popularity of German shepherds gives a lot of way for willy-nilly pet breeding. It wouldn't surprise me if some of their "mean streak" is due to backyard breeding. Same goes for why so many of them have hip dysplasia--people thought they looked better with slanted hindquarters.

      Delete
    11. Thank you Cardinal and I agree. A quiet clean calm dog being allowed to visit is ok, but dogs shouldn't be living in hospitals or nursing homes with the patient. Honestly backyard breeders, puppy mills and shelters are doing more to ruin dogs than any truly responsible breeders ever could.

They don't even entertain the possibility that the dog may have issues.
I would have a fit if someone brought a dog into a hospital room I was in or a loved one. I don't care how much they think a dog can cure any ill. I don't care if they shaved it and covered the beast in shrink wrap with a Lysol drip in its vein.

    15. RE: Dogs in hospital rooms. I take issue. Under the current social climate, I see it as a tactic employed by dog fanatics to inject dogs into everything. They are asserting their overclass status by pushing dogs where they are not expected, not welcome and offer little but more problems. Dog fanatics are going to put a dog (or 10) in your recovery room whether you like it or not. Anyone who takes issue is a dog hating Nazi!

Perhaps I should modify one of the above to read "dogs improve every outcome". While many believe this, they are wrong.

With very little exception, a hospital is simply not an appropriate place for a dog. Sick and injured people need to be treated and recover with a ZERO probability of being exposed to barking, biting, dog waste and other problems presented by dogs. Hospital staff require a work place free from dog problems and dog related distractions. People who are afraid of dogs and/or allergic to them do not need their conditions worsened by the presence of dogs that serve no worthwhile purpose whatsoever.

You what is really infuriating? What is infuriating are the totalitarian dog fanatics that flat out demand that EVERYTHING be about dogs! Every person, every organization, every policy has to be 100% all dogs, 100% of the time. Brain surgery? DOGS! Computer manufacturing? DOGS! Forget about anything ever being dog free, EVERYTHING has to be completely about dogs, all the time without an inch of flexibility. Every TV show, movie, book, song must be entirely about dogs. Our entire economy must be completely dog centric. Every nation must be of dogs, by dogs and for dogs. Nothing else can be of any consideration, for any reason. Ever!

The foamers are trying to take it to a whole new level for which the term "fanatic" is the understatement of all time.

    19. Last night I reconsidered dogs in hospitals for sanitation concerns. Even a clean animal can make more work for the staff and the patients susceptible to further illness. Also, to hear barking during recovery--NO. I guess I previously took exception because when I was a kid, I accepted the opportunity to briefly see two dogs in my hospital room. They asked me beforehand, and the dogs were exceptionally calm and quiet. I guess that made me associate handlers of hospital dogs as more professional and less "injecting" than other cases of dogs being stationed places. Sort of a "doing it because it makes people a little happier" thing.

Sometimes I remind myself I've been fairly lucky when it comes to the dog culture. It exists here, don't get me wrong. People be loving Fido over here. And there's a subtle, but underlying notion that dogs are the ONE and ONLY animal people aren't allowed to have negative feelings toward. It's not like that mindset ever led to a magnitude of dog-related issues, right? But I think I live in a place where dogs aren't completely shoved in peoples' faces everywhere they go--barking notwithstanding. If someone here were affronted by an "official" barging into their hospital room with a dog, staff would almost certainly take their side. In fact, it's very possible staff would say the dog wasn't anticipated or necessary. I don't know if it's the same where you guys live.

It has been proven more people will pay attention to an advertisement if there's a dog in it. Score for marketing, regardless of whether dogs are relevant to the product--and they often aren't. I think seeing it over and over brainwashes people into thinking it's only American to have a dog, or at least not American to protest when a dog's rights suddenly supersede yours. If that's too dystopian, I'll rephrase it: it alienates people who don't like dogs or the dog culture into staying silent, because protesting makes them look like uptight crazies. It makes me wonder how many dog owners in this country didn't REALLY want a dog and just thought they should have one, for one reason or another.

I hate dogs and have no problem voicing that to anyone. Right now we have a video camera running out our back window. This is the only way to get the cretins next door to shut their stupid dogs up. Other wise their stupid jackhammer barking piece of crap would be out in the road in front of our house carrying on half the night. Of course I understand it's not really the dogs fault their owners are to lazy to train their dogs. So far the only trick they've ever taught a dog is to stand at the end of a tire chain and bark it's ass off.

There's an event going on at our town square this weekend, fortunately between the idiots bringing snakes and pit bulls, it's not pet free. Unfortunately, there's less close parking than there used to be so more people are walking. The monster pit next door stands at the window barking and snarling at everyone going by. It would be a nice weekend to sit on the porch during down time, but listening to JR ruins it.

    22. That pit is a ticking time bomb.
Here is an interesting flash from the past. I volunteered in a nursing home years ago. They had a doggie visit. Several of the residents wanted nothing to do with it and the solution was to shuttle them back to their rooms. To be honest even the ones that stayed which was the majority patted the dogs but were more interested in engaging in conversation with their handlers. Usually trying to tell a story about a pet they'd had and in most cases shut down as the dog handler moved on in her quest to make sure everyone got the honor of patting her dog.
Do you know what they really liked. When any church , volunteers or best of all groups of children came at holidays to sing. It's really all crap in the nursing homes. Most people there are desperately lonely for HUMNAN contact.

Cardinal - do you have a link to any of those studies? Not that I'm asking you to put up or shut up, necessarily, just that its a very interesting topic. Probably worthy of a blog post.

It would be more interesting to delve deeper into those statistics to determine the precise pathology.

Similar to political consultants, marketing people can be very clever. The observations I make here are self evident - we have identified a significant segment of the population that self identify as "dog identitarian". Based on my observations of the Mick fans and other fanatics, I estimate that we are contemplating a population that is VERY easily manipulated (exploited), and I'm sure many of these marketing types have picked up on that, as well.

What would be really interesting to know is this: Does a dog in, say, an automobile ad stimulate the interest of a few people a LOT, or a lot of people a little. In other words, does the dog in the ad stimulate 10% of the viewers by 50%, or 50% by 10%?

Another good question is: Is the increased interest of a positive nature? IOW's, are people turned ON to the product by the dog, or turned OFF by the dog?

Most of the things we use are not expensive. Dr Foster $ Smith sent me a catalog and I realized that even though a cat was on the cover it was ALL dog supplies. AU, this is not my greatest moment. Unfortunately I can only pull up a small Cambridge Journal study, and you need an account to access it. It's not about advertisements, but journalists choosing something to capture audience attention. Obviously in this case it's dogs. The resulting spike of articles being moved to the front page implies dogs get attention. I imagine this "dog effect", as it's been called, can be transferred to marketing.

Despite the hideous marketing idea from Subaru for the dog tested dog approved crap Its rather distressing to think anyone would buy one based on the idea a dog approved it. They have some nice models. I mean a sane person with a dog might check the cargo space to make sure a crate would fit. A commercial seems more of a way to get the consumer to be aware of a product. Thus even repulsive adds can generate interest. I guess if it gets the consumer in the door it's a success.

This is a dog owners idea of responsibility. And no, not every dog will run after someone on a bike and bite them.

    1. The first time I was almost attacked by a dog, I was on my bike. The Rot was asleep on her porch and I was going to a friend's house. She came flying off the porch and would have bitten me if I didn't kick at her. The owners came out and threatened me. I told them if It happened again, I'd call the police, and have my dad shoot the damn thing. They kept it up after that.

    2. Yes how dare you ride your bike and then defend yourself. The nerve. You will notice how Honey's pit parents minimize the bite. I could have got worse walking in a pillow factory. And then the monsters called AC and filed a complaint.
Carry a freaking tire checker, they are small bats sold at truck stops, Usually solid oak. You can crack a mutts skull. Just remember aim for the side of the head or the muzzle not the top of the dogs head.

    3. I used to cycle a lot and I recall one particular incident when I was cycling along minding my own business when someone's yappy little mutt came charging at my feet. I wasn't expecting it and wobbled. Thankfully I managed to steady myself but I could have gone sideways into a line of traffic. It was quite terrifying, to be honest. To think that someone suffered that AND a bite means that the dog should be euthanised. It's dangerous.

  13. I know pits aren't legit service dogs. They don't search and rescue, nor are they stable for seeing eye, balance assist, or police work. They're great phony E.S.D. dogs, until they maul someone or a smaller animal. Then, it's either the owner, the shelter, or the victim's fault. In Tater's case, when I first saw the story, it was the fault of a trainer who used Cesar Milan's methods, suddenly the dog has P.T.S.D. from that trainer. It seems the girl who had him always has something go "wrong" with her animals. She put a cat down, according to one source, because she feared for it's life with her Cathoula and pit bull around. The Cathoula has hip dysplasia so it won't work as her ESD, and will eventually be put down. She's sixteen and her parents appear to be horrible enablers. Tater may very well have started attacking her, and she claimed she was scared to report it, because he would be put down. If she has signs of being attacked and nobody in school, or the vet's offices has reported her parents for neglect, they're dropping the ball. It's an all around failure, but it's been like a train wreck to me.
I often wonder why the dogs speak like three year olds with speech impediments. So few owners of normal dogs seem to feel the need to do that. Maybe the baby talk disarms people into believing the dogs are normal and just big babies.

  14. If I read through the drivel correctly the vet and the person from the rescue seen the bite marks. PItters refuse to believe that any pit could be aggressive unless it was saved from evil dog fighting rings.
As a rule owners of normal breeds are not nearly as hostile and vicious as a pit owner. They are just lazy , shiftless and irresponsible.

  15. If medical care wasn't sought the parents are guilty of neglect. If the vet or rescuers were responsible at all, they would report the parents for the neglect. I don't believe the dog isn't capable of biting for no reason, I have a hard time believing at pit bull quit after only breaking fingers. That doesn't seem typical of the maulers, dog bites are ugly from a normal dog, they're the stuff of nightmares when it's a pit.

  16. Again Trisha. We only hear of the pits that kill or severely maul. Pits like any other dog are capable of biting.

  17. I know, I tend to forget only the nasty attacks make any news. I wonder if this one will go full pit when it's adopted out to someone else? There was another adoptable pit on the news this morning. "Better with older kids, prefers to be the only dog, and doesn't like cats. ". I'm sure some idiot will adopt it, and their poor neighbors will lose a few pets, hopefully not their kids, or their lives.

    1. This is my biggest beef with shelters and rescues. The assumption that the person adopting a dog with issues lives in a vacuum. As long as the dog has a forever home everyone around them is forced to deal with its issues. It blows my mind they can adopt out a dog with those precautions and in the same sentence claim it passed it's good citizenship eval and temperament test.

  18. Agreed, after all, it's impossible for the adopter to avoid small kids, other dogs and cats at all times. So, when the adopted dog mauls or kills one of the three, the fool that adopted them gets all of the blame. meanwhile the shelter continues to adopt out the exact same type of dog over and over again. Lather, rinse, repeat, the shelters get money from fools, adopt out killers, adopters get the blame, the dogs keep being bred. I'm not against adopting pets, I have quite a few adopted rats. I'm against adopting animals that were bred to fight to the death.

This is insanity. I guess the Mickstateers have found a new mutt to froth over. There is obviously some aggression issues with this dog. Now had the parents of this girl simply said enough and taken the dog to the vet and had it euthanized for aggression this wouldn't be going on. I'm unclear on who the real attention whores are in this mess.

    4. I think the parents and the girl. Considering during part of the mess she vanished from it, getting people to beg her to come back. I'm not sure which is more sick, having a "service" dog that is deadly, or using some poor stupid animal to seek all kinds of attention. If the dog is indeed showing signs of "going pit", it should be put down, but why advertise it? It's a dog, and if it were a normal dog, the owner might look for a medical reason, but I highly doubt they'd advertise on facebook about putting it down. That's the special kind of stupid reserved for the nutters. Then they can whine and cry about being persecuted for choosing to destroy a dangerous, deadly animal.

I like my tater tots hot and salty, either fried or baked nice and crispy in the oven.

  22. There's an eleventh commandment: Thou shall risk injury to yourself and others to take the dog wherever you go. Even if the dog is aggressive and a threat to every living thing around it.
We walked to a local place for dinner this evening. It was peaceful except for the traffic. Until we were walking back and the pit bull in the SUV noticed my son. The dog started barking and trying to lunge out the window. The macho owner with his shaved head and tattoos almost hit the sign post, and damn near ran the red light, trying to strong arm the stupid dog and keep it in the back seat. Of course we all know, being seven, walking down the sidewalk, and carrying leftovers are perfectly legit reasons for precious doggy to attack kids, according to their owners. I would've broken the damn things neck, with no regrets.

    1. I'm must glad you're both OK. You need to teach your son not to make pit bulls feel threatened. Staying at home and in a dark closet would be best. Pit bulls are very timid dogs and just about anything can send them into a panic and force them to kill in order to save their own lives.
The most likely scenario if the dog got out would be for the driver to take off. There is a reason so few pits seem to have ID tags on.

    2. Thank you. He probably would have taken off. Cruising with a normal dog poses enough danger. Cruising with a big, obviously highly reactive pit bull should be considered a suicide mission.

    1. From 1st October 2015, it is an offence in the UK to smoke in a vehicle if there is a person under 18 present, even with the windows and sunroof open.

It will not be an offence to have large, potentially vicious dogs in a house where there are under-18s present.

      Go figure, as they say.
