They seem to make their way to shelters quite often. The other breeds, I can see finding homes for. Kurt was just a garden variety mutt with a short amount of time left. He wasn't real young, had long hair and was a bigger dog. Once he got over hiking his leg, he proved to be a sweet, lovable, calm and gentle dog. We saved him and he was a great pet for the money and effort. Again, I'd choose a kill shelter and another mutt before going to a no kill and adopting any purebred. By avoiding aggressive, sick, and otherwise unadoptable dogs they skew the numbers in their favor. It's been reported on many occasions that a no kill shelter took dogs to a kill shelter-because they knew they wouldn't be adopting them out. Most dogs are raised horribly and with little obedience training.and they don't kill or pull faces off children. They pee on the carpet and bark incessantly but only a few breeds. T...Well, it just happened again in my neighborhood. The low-life drug dealers around the corner own a pit bull that, "Keeps getting out, somehow" (The garage door opens 18"-24", the dog trots out, the garage door closes. It's a mystery that will forever remain unsolved). Usually when the dog gets out, my delusional, "dogs are better than people" neighbor lures it back home with dog treats, then denies to animal control and everyone else that the dog gets out, is aggressive, or is anything other than just simply wonderful. This is the same thing she did with the boxer that lived behind us. The boxer ended up biting three people before the owners finally moved.

Yesterday, a retired pilot that has the misfortune of living next door to the drug dealers made the mistake of taking his dogs for their afternoon walk a few hours early. This just happened to coincide with the pit bull's third "escape" of the day, before it could make its way over to my neighbor's house for its treats. Being the kind, loving, gently thing it is, the pit bull attacked the pilot's dogs on sight and refused to let go. After getting annoyed at being hit and kicked, the pit bull attacked the pilot, tearing into his foot and ankle. I'm not sure how bad the pilot or his dog's are (his dog's simply rolled over and yelped), but this is something that never should of happened.

Unsurprisingly, animal control did nothing more than take the dog for a 10 day quarantine and tell the owner if this happens again he will be very, very upset.

I told a neighbor's dog to shut up several months ago and a sheriff's deputy showed up threatening to arrest me because yelling over a fence is a felony (I'm pretty sure my “dog's are better than people” neighbor called the cops on me... and embellished things). A pit bull runs loose for months, eventually attacks two dogs and a person and the owner's don't even get a ticket. I don't get it. I really don't.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1547600777592832280.post-76939861343002747802015-05-12T19:48:31.705-07:002015-05-12T19:48:31.705-07:00What good does the free room and board do the anim...What good does the free room and board do the animals? It's a life largely lived in a cage. Shouldn't cats and dogs honestly have more of a life than that? I have an old friend from school who rescues senior dachshunds. Most are little more than hospice cases. They come from backyard breeders with numerous health problems. If kill shelters help put a stop to the animals suffering then we need more, not less of them. That just seems like common sense to me. Honestly, I'd adopt from a kill shelter again but would pass on most no kill places. The only exception would be the few exotic pet rescues that are no kill. I'm not an animal rights activist, but I prefer not to support the pet industry even with my small animals.
